Fortune-telling

Nono…I can’t do any of those stuff. Not that I want to. But are you a believer? I’m a half-and-half. As with most things, I’m curious to know what these people have to say about my future, but I’m also critical of their sources. Is there really such a thing as the sixth sense?

I recently went on such an outing with LC, an old classmate of mine. She was terribly concerned about the state of her yet-to-be marital affairs. Apparently, many a fortune-teller has been predicting that she would be spending her golden years alone. I’m not that keen on the children part, but the alone without partner issue…now I must admit I would be affected too if some stranger were to hand me such an omen. I know it takes effort to maintain any relationship, but how do you fully explain how some people remain single for the rest of their lives? Are they simply uninterested? Have higher priorities? Enjoy the loneliness? Don’t realize they’re being difficult despite several attempts? Or…could it be because they were destined to be alone? Aha…

Warning: If you’re a non-believer, do not proceed. Snort-fest starts here…

So off we set to Master Ng’s office in Gombak. The receptionist requested only for our Chinese names and year of birth. Eh…this fortune-telling thing so simple? What happened to all the complicated date-of-birth and time-of-birth thingy? Puzzled, we entered his room to find him furiously counting and scribbling away at our names. The very first words from his mouth were: “You…,” pointing at a friend, “are going to have serious health problems. “You…,” pointing at LC, “are being plain difficult. And you…,” pointing at me this time, “are bound to lose some fortune.” Bleh…why do they all start with the bad news? And so our session began. He told us that our Chinese names could determine our personalities and health and wealth state and described ours in detail. The fact that we kept asking questions probably led to this extremely detailed discussion. But at the end, he assured us that changing our names would eventually lead to a better change in our lives, health-wise, relationship-wise, and personality-wise. And so we parted with our RM 40, with promises of a new name within 2 weeks.

Generally, he was right about us. But as Hwai always says, how wrong can they be if there are only that many possibilities to talk about? They’re bound to be right at some point. And with us being so eager to believe, perhaps we helped him along by prompting him every once in a while. So believe what you will, it’s up to you. Like LC, maybe it’s a way for her to have faith in love again. Me…maybe it’s a wake-up call to stop being a pushover and speak up for myself when needed. He was right about one thing, though. I did part with a piece of my fortune…my RM 40 😦
